Prudential Filed a WARN Notice for 125 New Jersey Jobs: Is Insurance Hiring Slowing?
Prudential layoffs: a WARN notice lists 125 Newark job cuts, 321 across four 2026 notices. BLS data shows insurance employment down 90,000 since May 2025.
Prudential Insurance Company of America has a WARN notice covering 125 layoffs in Newark, New Jersey, between 28 November and 31 December 2026, according to NJBIZ. NJBIZ counts four Prudential WARN notices in 2026 with 321 cuts in total. Federal data shows the wider insurance sector is shrinking too: employment in insurance carriers and related activities is down about 90,000 since May 2025.
What happened at Prudential?
Prudential filed a WARN notice for 125 jobs in New Jersey, and NJBIZ reports the filing was made in September 2026. The cuts fall under the subsidiary Prudential Insurance Company of America, and WARNTracker lists the 125 workers with an effective date of 28 November 2026 in Newark.
Prudential has not said which teams or job titles are affected, and the notice figures alone do not show it. As of 12 October 2026 the New Jersey Department of Labor list is the underlying record; the dates and counts here come from NJBIZ and from WARNTracker, which says it draws on U.S. Department of Labor WARN data.
Is 321 the right total for Prudential's 2026 cuts?
NJBIZ reports four Prudential WARN notices in 2026 totalling 321 cuts, and the Newark listings on WARNTracker reproduce that number. Added by effective date, the four notices are:
| Effective date | Workers | Entity listed |
|---|---|---|
| 7 May 2026 | 54 | Prudential Financial, Inc. |
| 17 July 2026 | 53 | Prudential Insurance Company of America |
| 18 September 2026 | 89 | Prudential Insurance Company of America |
| 28 November 2026 | 125 | Prudential Insurance Company of America |
| Total | 321 |
The sum is 54 + 53 + 89 + 125 = 321. WARNTracker labels these as effective dates, not the dates Prudential filed. The 54-role notice, for example, was reported in March 2026 with eliminations scheduled between May and June, and the 53-role notice was reported on 29 May 2026.
How big is this relative to Prudential's workforce?
The 125 jobs are a small slice of the company. Insurance Business describes the 53-job round as a small portion of a workforce of more than 36,000 globally. On that base, 125 jobs is about 0.35%, and all 321 is under 1%.
Size does not make the cuts painless for the people affected. It does change the reading: this looks like steady pruning, not a single large restructuring announcement. Prudential has also been cutting for more than a year. Insurance Business reported that announced cuts since July 2025 had reached 290 by 29 May 2026, and Beinsure reported that Prudential's 2024 WARN notices covered 637 roles combined.
Why is Prudential cutting jobs?
The company says it is focusing on where it competes best. A Prudential spokesperson told BestWire: "Prudential is strengthening our business to deliver long-term growth by investing in the capabilities where we're most competitive," and added that "These decisions are never easy, and we're committed to providing impacted employees with support, care, and respect," as reported by Insurance Business. The spokesperson's statement also said the company makes targeted adjustments and at times reorganizes its workforce to align with strategy.
CEO Andy Sullivan has been more specific about direction. Per the same report, he said Prudential is scaling back businesses it does not consider competitive, including exits from markets in Asia and Africa, and named retirement and asset management as areas with strong potential. The report says Prudential recently sold PGIM operations in Taiwan and India and insurance businesses in Kenya and Indonesia. These are the company's own descriptions of its plans.
The cuts come alongside profit, not losses. Beinsure reported Prudential's fourth-quarter 2025 net income attributable to the company at $905 million, against a net loss of $57 million a year earlier.
Is insurance hiring actually slowing?
Yes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said on 2 October 2026 that employment in financial activities is down by 129,000 since a recent peak in May 2025, with most of the job loss in insurance carriers and related activities (-90,000). That is about 70% of the financial-activities decline.
The BLS industry page for insurance carriers and related activities (NAICS 524, which includes agencies and brokerages as well as carriers) shows the recent path. Figures are seasonally adjusted, in thousands, and the August and September values are preliminary:
| Month | Employment (thousands) |
|---|---|
| June 2026 | 2,942.5 |
| July 2026 | 2,937.8 |
| August 2026 (p) | 2,932.7 |
| September 2026 (p) | 2,930.4 |
Source: BLS, Industries at a Glance, data extracted 2 October 2026. Insurance Business, reading the same release, reports that the sector employs about 2.93 million people, down 76,000 or 2.5% from a year earlier, and that September was the 11th consecutive monthly decline. It also reports a loss of about 1,900 jobs a month on average in 2025 and roughly 6,900 a month so far in 2026.
The same article says the drop from the February 2025 peak of 3.03 million now exceeds the 86,800 jobs lost between July 2008 and early 2011, although the industry is larger today.
Which insurance jobs are shrinking and which are not?
Claims work is falling fastest. The Jacobson Group's September 2026 Labor Market Pulse, as relayed by Insurance Business, gives these July 2026 year-over-year changes:
| Segment | Change in employment |
|---|---|
| Claims | -20.9% |
| Life and health carriers | -4% |
| Property and casualty carriers | -1.7% |
| Agents and brokers | -1.1% |
| Title | +0.3% |
| Reinsurance | +3.6% |
Source: Insurance Business, 2 October 2026, citing Jacobson. Reinsurance and title are the only growing segments in that list.
Pay gives a sense of what is at stake in claims and underwriting. BLS lists 2025 median annual wages of $77,020 for claims adjusters, $81,370 for underwriters and $49,860 for claims and policy processing clerks, per the BLS insurance industry page (2025 data).
Are insurers saying one thing and doing another?
Surveys and payrolls point in different directions. A Q1 2026 Jacobson and Aon study found that 93% of carriers planned to increase or hold staff steady. Yet Insurance Business reported in August 2026 that property and casualty headcount grew just 0.81% between January 2025 and January 2026, against 1.42% expected.
The October 2026 report adds that in the Q3 2026 study 26% of property and casualty respondents reported cutting staff, against 13% who had planned to. For life and health, 29% reported cuts against 10% planned. Overall, 49% of companies said they expect to add staff and 11% plan cuts.
Other employers are cutting as well. Insurance Business reports that Acrisure said in May it would cut 2,250 jobs, about 11% of its global workforce, which is the company's own figure.
Is AI behind the slowdown?
The evidence does not settle it. The August Insurance Business article cites a Harvard working paper covering 65 million workers and more than 280,000 firms, which found junior employment fell roughly 9% at companies that adopted generative AI. That study is not about insurance specifically, and Prudential has not attributed its cuts to AI. Its stated reasons are strategy and focus.
What should affected workers and job seekers do now?
Practical steps follow from the data, and they are advice, not claims about Prudential's process.
- Check the segment, not just the sector. Claims roles show the steepest decline in the Jacobson data. Reinsurance and title are growing, so adjacent skills may travel there.
- Look at retirement and asset management. Prudential's CEO named these as growth areas, so internal moves or applications to similar firms may fit better than property and casualty claims work.
- Apply through employers' own career pages. Use the posting on the company's site and skip any closed listing.
- Use the notice window. The New Jersey notice runs from 28 November to 31 December 2026, so affected employees have time to plan. Prudential says it is committed to providing impacted employees with support.
- Watch the next data points. The next BLS jobs report is due on 6 November 2026, and later releases will show whether the streak of declines continues.
What's still unclear?
Several points remain open.
- Which roles are affected. Prudential has not published job titles or teams for the 125 cuts.
- Exact filing dates. WARNTracker shows effective dates only, and NJBIZ says only that the 125-job filing was made in September. The 321 total depends on which entries are counted: WARNTracker also lists a separate 63-worker Prudential Financial entry effective 9 January 2026, which falls outside the four notices behind NJBIZ's total.
- Different totals elsewhere. Insurance Business counted 290 announced cuts since July 2025 as of 29 May, a different period from the 2026 count.
- Data revisions. The August and September BLS insurance figures are preliminary and can change. The insurance category also covers agencies and brokerages, not carriers alone.
- The weakest link in the argument. One company's WARN notices do not prove an industry trend. Prudential is also pulling out of businesses and markets, so part of its cuts reflect a company strategy and not weak insurance demand. The sector-wide case rests on BLS data, not on Prudential.
